Herefordshire is not overrun with web developers. Most businesses here end up with one of two things: a template bought from a national outfit that has never seen the county, or a site built years ago by someone local who has since moved on. Both work until they do not.
I am based just over the county line in Worcestershire and work across Herefordshire. Hereford, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Bromyard, Kington and the villages between them. New sites are hand-coded rather than assembled in a page builder, and existing sites can be taken on and maintained without rebuilding them first.
Why page weight matters more here
This is the practical difference between building for a rural county and building for a city. Broadband and mobile coverage across Herefordshire are uneven, and a good share of your visitors will land on your site over a connection that is nothing like the office wi-fi it was designed on.
A page-builder homepage that loads acceptably in Hereford city centre can take three or four times as long in the Golden Valley or halfway up a lane outside Bromyard. That is not a theoretical problem. It is the difference between someone reading your opening hours and someone going back to the search results.
Hand-written markup and CSS makes a genuine difference here, because there is simply less to download. It is the least glamorous performance work there is, and it is usually the most effective.
The sectors that get in touch
- Food, drink and agriculture. Producers, farm shops, cider makers and box schemes, usually needing a site that handles seasonality and a shop that does not fall over in November.
- Tourism and hospitality. B&Bs, holiday lets, campsites and activity operators around the Wye Valley and the Black Mountains, where the site is competing with the booking platforms for the direct enquiry.
- Trades and rural services. Businesses whose customers find them on a phone, on the move, often with two bars of signal.
- Professional services in Hereford. Solicitors, accountants and consultancies where the site is a credibility check rather than a shop.
New builds

Care plans across the county
Being rural cuts both ways. There are fewer local developers to call when something breaks, which makes an arrangement that already exists worth more than a phone number you have to go looking for. Sites built in Elementor, Divi or anything else are all taken on as they are. New work avoids page builders; maintaining an existing one is a different question entirely, and rebuilding a site that still does its job is rarely the honest recommendation.
